Prof. M.Z. Umar


Brief Biography

Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, Ph. D. is a Professor of Political Science at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS). He was first employed at the UDUS as a Graduate Assistant in 1989 and became a Professor in 2009. Professor Umar was at various times, Ag. Head of Department of Political Science, Deputy Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences as well as Dean of the Postgraduate School at UDUS. He was appointed by His Excellency the Governor of Sokoto State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Sokoto State University in May 2017 which second tenure he completed in May 2021. He also served as the University’s Ag. Director, TetFund’s Research and Development Center of Excellence. Currently, Prof Umar is the Chairman of the Board of Centre for Open and Distance Education (CODE) at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University. Sokoto. Prof. Umar has been involved in series of Research and Training activities, serving as Consultant to various organizations, including the National Center for Women Development (NCWD), Abuja, in 2008; USAID funded Research Triangle Institute (RTI/LEAD) 2011 – 2013 and as Consultant to the European Union (EU) - sponsored and British Council implemented Agents for Citizen Driven Transformation (EU - ACT) programme in Network Leadership and Management in ten (10) states of Nigeria 2020 – 2022. He was at various times, Resource Person to several organizations, including the Institute of Security Studies, Abuja, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPPS, Kuru, Jos, The Electoral Institute of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the House Committee on Marine Transport, National Assembly, Abuja A Fulbright Fellow, served at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA between 1998 and 1999, Prof Umar has served as an External Examiner and Assessor for promotion to Reader and Professor for various State and Federal Universities in Nigeria as well as CODESRIA, Senegal. He is a member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA) and Social Science Academy of Nigeria (SSAN) Prof. Umar is happily married
