Prof. Chika Umar Aliyu


Brief Biography

Chika Umar Aliyu was born in Birnin Kebbi in 1966. He is a Professor in the Department of Economics, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He obtained his PhD in Economics from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He earned his M.Sc. Economics from International Islamic University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1992 and B. Sc. Economics from University of Sokoto in 1988. Aliyu is a prolific writer with many articles published in local and international journals. His research interest is in Development Economics, History of Economic Thought and Islamic Economics.
Aliyu, in addition to academic activities, is also a consultant who has requisite experience and also acquainted with both Nigerian and international Islamic Financial Markets. He undertook several consultancy services within and outside the country. Among the consultancy works he rendered are:
1. Undertook a Survey research for DFID on the Impact of Shari`ah as a Factor in Economic Growth of Northern Nigeria with a Special focus on Kano State.
2. Worked as consultant for IDB Jeddah to review and assess the works and contributions of some scholars for the award of IDB prize in 2013.
3. A Proposal for securing funds through public sector pipe line borrowing Plan 2012 to finance critical projects. Submitted through the office of Secretary to the State Government.
4. Prepared a Proposal for Kebbi State in June 2013 in order to secure interest free loans from Jaiz Bank Plc. to finance some critical development projects in the state within a period of five years. Submitted through the office of Secretary to the State Government.
5. A proposal for obtaining funds for Kebbi State from the Natural Resources Development Funds to finance critical priority projects in Kebbi. Submitted through the office of Secretary to the State Government.
6. Served as Senior Research Assistant under Professor Attahiru Muhammad Jega in a Research on Kebbi Book Project aimed at covering the socio-economic profile of the state in terms of potentials in various aspects such as culture, economy, institutions, etc.
7. Participated in a training workshop sponsored by TetFund on "Research Proposal Writing & Grants Management Capacity Building" held in Dubai, UAE from 14th to 18th, December 2020.
