Master of Science in Animal Production


PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of this programme is to address the surging manpower needs in the livestock sub sector of the economy, Higher educational institutions as well as various research institutions in the country.  This postgraduate programme is designed to provide candidates with essentials in modern techniques of livestock production.  The programme will also produce competent researchers in Animal Production.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES:   

Aim: To produce professional personnel with advanced knowledge in Animal production.

Objectives: The objectives of this programme are:-

i.        Equip candidates with techniques and modern practices in basic and Applied Research in Animal Production.

ii.       The programme will also produce specialists that will provide trained manpower to the livestock sub sector.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 

i.        Five ‘O’ Level credits Passes in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

ii.       Doctor of Veterinary Medicine DVM Degree or its equivalent from recognized Institutions.

iii.      Bachelor of Science in Animal Production, bachelor of Agriculture or any related Bachelor of Science degree, at minimum of second class lower.

iv.      Candidates must satisfy the university’s requirement for matriculation.

          Other qualification required by Board of Post Graduate School and the university senate.

MODE OF STUDY:     Full time course, research.

DURATION: The Programme will require a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.

TUITION FEES: As determined by the University from time to time.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

  1. Graduates of the programme can be employed in any outfit that deals with Animal Production, Animal health, Teaching and research institutions, public or private farms.
  2. They could also be employed in Artificial Insemination Centres or companies, Embryo Transfer Centres or Companies.
  3. Graduates could also be self-employed in production

AREAS OF SPECIALISATION:

  1. Poultry Production
  2. Sheep and Goat Production
  3. Dairy Cattle Production
  4. Rabbit Production
  5. Pasture and Rangeland Management

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:  Each candidate registered for this programme will be required to:

  1. Present two Seminars at most one per semester
  2. Defend a Dissertation orally before a panel of internal and external examiners and this will be graded.
  3. Pass a minimum of 36 units of core courses and 6 units of electives 12 units of Dissertation.
