Philosophy of the Programme

The need to empower adult population through expanded educational opportunities may help in addressing the many problems confronting the society with particular reference to low literacy level, high poverty rate, unemployment and diseases in the society. No nation can rise to glory and development with its citizens being illiterates and educationally underserved. Nigeria is one of the countries with highest concentration of illiterates and out-of-school persons. And the economy of any nation is knowledge driven in relation to quality and quantity of human resource personnel in various field of endeavours. The B.Ed Adult Education degree programme therefore, is to train highly skilled adult and non-formal education personnel to engineer and channel the abundant human and material resources in Nigeria in order to help hasten the socio-economic and political development of the country as well as humanity.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. prepare high-level manpower in the field of adult and non-informal education with competencies in effective teaching/facilitation of adult learning;
  2. train students to have the capability of planning, developing, organizing, coordinating, supervising, monitoring and evaluating of adult and non-informal education programmes;
  3. provide opportunity for further studies in adult and no-informal education and other development endeavours; and
  4. train personnel  with sound knowledge to implement the curriculum of adult and non informal education.

Admission Requirements

UTME: Four Years Programme

Five O’ level credit passes, including English and   Mathematics, at not more than 2 sittings or its equivalent in relevant subject areas in addition to an acceptable pass in Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Direct Entry Programme

i.  Five O’ level credit passes, including English and   Mathematics, at not more than 2 sittings or its equivalent in relevant subject areas in addition to an acceptable pass in Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

ii. A pass at merit level (not less than 2.50 on CGPA) in a relevant Diploma course (provided the UTME has been satisfied).

iii. Passes in two (2) major subjects in relevant areas in the NCE with GCE ‘O’ level credit or its equivalent in five (5) other subjects.

iv  A minimum of nine (9) points in relevant subject areas at advanced level with TC/SSSCE/GCE ‘O’ level five (5) credit passes not more than two sittings.
