B.Sc Applied Chemistry

PHILOSOPHY

The ability of humanity to enhance its quality of life is largely dependent on its capacity to develop, manipulate and utilise both energy and material resources in the environment. This in turn requires a scientific investigation and understanding of the material world and its transformation. The B.Sc. degree programme in Applied Chemistry is designed to provide training in the theory and
practice of chemistry in order to stimulate creative thinking and research for industrial application of chemical principles for development and production of commercially important products such as polymers, dyestuff, petroleum and petrochemical products, iron and steel, fertilizer and agrochemicals, etc. The programme emphasizes the importance of a thorough grounding in experimental chemistry by exposing to students to operational aspects of chemical industry and the modern analytical equipment. Graduates of the programme should be able to functionally contribute to effective industrial exploitation of the nation’s resources for job creation and improved quality of life.

OBJECTIVES

Under its Undergraduate programme, the Department offers courses leading to the Bachelors’ Degrees (B.Sc. Honours) in Applied Chemistry. The programmes are designed to:

  1. Provide training in the theory and practice of all branches of chemistry,
  2. Emphasise the importance of thorough grounding in chemical techniques and the manipulation of modern equipment,
  3. Cultivate a curious and enquiring mind and hence stimulate creative thinking and research,
  4. Create an understanding and appreciation of methodologies and characteristics of scholarships and creative scientific work.
  5. Inculcate an awareness of the resources as well as developmental problems in the immediate environment and the crucial role of chemistry in the task of nation building,
  6. Prepare the Applied chemistry students for professional participation in the chemical industries.
  7. Develop the ability of the students and inculcate in them self- employment habit on graduation.
