Science and Vocational Education

DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN BRIEF
The University of Sokoto, now Usmanu Danfodiyo University was established in 1975, however academic programmes could not start until 1977. Faculty of Education and Extension Services along with 4 other pioneering Faculties were established to start academic activities in the university. Department of Education was among the 2 departments established in the Faculty. The Department offered various degree programmes including Bachelor of Science Degrees in Education B. Sc. (Ed). The programmes are: – B. Sc. (Ed) Mathematics – B. Sc. (Ed) Biology – B. Sc. (Ed) Chemistry – B. Sc. (Ed) Physics.In1993 the Department of Education was splitted into 3 academic units, namely; – Science and Vocational Education unit – Educational Foundations unit, and – Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology unit. The 3 units continued to operate with a Head and run relevant degree programmes in their areas of specialization. All the 3 units were answerable to Head of Department of Education. The Science and Vocational Education Unit continued to run the 4 degree programmes in Science and mathematics as mentioned earlier. In 2009, the 3 academic units were upgraded into full-fledged degree awarding departments. Thus, the Department of Science and Vocational Education has come into being from the science and vocational education unit of the department of education. The new department has eleven (11) academic staff, 4 non-academic staff and approximately students from UG I-IV as per 2009/2010 academic session. Furthermore, the department as of now offers both full-time and Part-time undergraduate Degree programmes. For full-time, the following programmes are run by the Department. – B. Sc. (Ed) Mathematics – B. Sc. (Ed) Biology – B. Sc. (Ed) Chemistry – B. Sc. (Ed) Physics – B. Sc. (Ed) Agricultural Science and B. Sc. (Ed) Computer Science. On the Part-time bases, the following Degree Programme are offered: – B. Ed Agricultural Sciences Education – B. Ed Biology Education- B. Ed Chemistry Education – B. Ed Physics Education – B. Ed Integrated Science Education – B. Ed Mathematics Education – B. Ed Computer Education. Postgraduate programmes started in the defunct department of education in 1985 with M. Ed and Ph. D Science Education, while M Ed Mathematics Education was introduced in 1989/1990 session. Ph. D Mathematics Education programme was introduced in 2004/2005 session. The Department also offers M. Phil in Science and Mathematics Education
Philosophy
The philosophy of Science, Mathematics and Vocational Education programmes is to prepare students for theoretical, pedagogical and administrative competence for teaching Mathematics, the Core Science and Vocational subjects at Secondary School level, in line with the philosophy, goals and objectives of the National Policy on Education and the philosophy and the statutes of UsmanuDanfodiyo University, Sokoto
Objectives
The objectives of the programmes are to produce:
1)Well trained science, mathematics and vocational teachers who have acquired an in-depth knowledge and wide spectrum of course content of at least 2 academic science subjects, right knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that would enable them to contribute to the growth and development of their communities in particular and the nation in general.
2)Skilled science, mathematics and vocational teachers who have acquired an adequate level of professional training in teaching mathematics, science and vocational subjects at post-primary school level.
3)Science, mathematics and vocational teachers who have acquired and developed the necessary leadership qualities and skills needed to administer a post-primary school.
4)Highly creative, imaginative and resourceful science, mathematics and vocational teachers who would simplify teaching in their various subjects and provide adequate and necessary guidance to their students.
5)Science, mathematics and vocational teachers who have acquired basic knowledge and ability to conduct research and evaluate current research findings in teaching and learning.
6)Highly motivated, conscientious and efficient science, mathematics and vocational teachers for all level of our educational system.
