Who We Are

Sokoto Energy Research Centre (SERC) is a national Centre of Excellence under the supervision of the Energy Commission of Nigeria. Established in 1982 by the Senate of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, the Centre plays a strategic role in energy research, technology development, human capacity building, consultancy, and policy advisory support.

Towards the end of 1982, the Federal Government decided to make the University of Sokoto a Centre for Solar Energy Research. With the establishment of the Energy Commission of Nigeria in 1988, the Commission took over the supervision and funding of the Centre.

Our Mandate

Dedicated to advancing clean and sustainable energy technologies to strengthen national socio-economic development.

  • Conduct Research & Development

    Organize and carry out research in the most economical means for harnessing solar and other renewable energy sources.

  • Design & Test Technologies

    Investigate appropriate designs of renewable energy equipment and develop, produce, and test prototypes for domestic and industrial uses.

  • Build Skilled Manpower

    Serve as a Centre for the development of manpower and professional training in solar and other renewable energy technologies.

  • Provide Consultancy

    Serve as a resource Centre offering advisory and research facilities, and provide expert consultancy services.

  • Information Dissemination

    Disseminate results of R&D through seminars, conferences, public awareness programmes and publications.

  • Foster Collaboration

    Collaborate with similar institutions and bodies engaged in solar and other renewable energy research and development.
