UDUS Held Matriculation Ceremony - Click to read more
The University held it’s 2011/2012 Matriculation Ceremony on Wednesday, 11th May, 2011.
The Vice-Chancellor’s speech at the occasion is reproduced below.
“Assalamu Alaikum,
“It is with gratitude to the Almighty Allah that I welcome you to the Matriculation Ceremony of students admitted into the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, for the 2010/2011 academic session. All praises be to Him for making it possible. This is the 32nd of such Ceremony since the University was established in 1975. From less than 200 students in 1977, in a handful of Faculties, the University has grown to about 16,000 students (excluding non-degree students) in ten Faculties and Postgraduate School. |
 |
“Every year, we have had an increase in the number of students seeking admission into this important institution. This is due to our track record of academic excellence, peace, absence of cultists and concern for good moral values. The University took first position among all the Nigerian Universities (whether federal, state or private) in the November, 2005 NUC Accreditation Exercise. Similarly, the University has won Nigerian Universities Doctoral Theses Award Scheme (NUDTAS) twice (2005 and 2007) and has remarkably been doing well in all other areas of assessments and evaluations by different Educational Regulatory Bodies in Nigeria. We report the above annually to fresh students to make them understand that they have chosen a better University to pursue their studies.
“This year, of the about nine (9,000) UME applicants to our University, who sat for the screening examination, and four thousand (4,000) Directory Entry applicants, only three thousand, nine hundred and thirty three (3,933) are being matriculated today. The distribution is as follows:
1. Faculty of Agriculture - 118
2. Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies - 520
3. Faculty of Education & Extension Services - 956
- Education/Science - 420
- Education/Arts - 106
- Education/Social Science - 210
- Primary Education (Science & Arts) - 130
- Adult Education (Science & Arts) - 90
4. Faculty of Law - 200
5. Faculty of Science - 1,053
6. Faculty of Management Sciences - 320
7. Faculty of Social Sciences - 415
8. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - 120
9. College of Health Sciences - 178
- MBBS - 114
- BMLS - 64
10. Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences - 53
TOTAL = 3,933
“It is clear from the table above that priority has been given to the sciences and science-related programmes. This is our response to the desire of the country for rapid advances in science and technology. To further guarantee this, for the past six years to date, we have repositioned and strengthened our School of Matriculation Studies, continuously to prepare science students for eventual placement into our various science and science-based programmes.
“All of you matriculating today should consider yourself lucky as you begin another exciting phase of your life. There are many hurdles you will have to cross before you can earn the degree you are being matriculated for. These hurdles include hard work, strict adherence to University rules and regulations, high moral standards and respect for constituted authority, among others. Before this matriculation exercise, orientation programme was organized for you across the faculties in order to make you conversant with the University environment, its rules and regulations as well as familiarizing you with other important organs of the University to ease your stay. Furthermore, to contribute to nation-building, students are enjoined to steer clear of extremism and intolerance in especially ethnic and religious matters. These are some of the vices that are posing major threats to our fatherland. We have a duty to stamp them out of our campuses and in our national life.
“You should consider the Matriculation Oath you have just taken as a potent instrument of social control being injected in you today. You must allow the Oath and its ceremony to help you develop self discipline, resistance against any temptation for indulging in undesirable behaviours and practices such as cultism, drug abuse, examination misconduct, poor attendance of lectures and other related offences. These are evils the University does not condone. Esteemed matriculating students, I enjoin you to read the Students Handbook very carefully to serve as an important guide for your stay in this University.
“The University expects you to justify the confidence reposed in you by your parents and sponsors. They are making enormous investment in your education with the hope that you will one day be useful to yourself and to the society of which you are a part. Dedication to scholarship, respect for constituted authority and shunning all vices are necessary if success is your goal. On our part, I want to assure you that we will use all the resources (material and human) at our disposal in ensuring that your stay at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto is worthwhile.
“Today is not for matriculating students alone. I want to seize this opportunity to also reiterate to all students the need to continue to be of good behaviour and to work hard towards completing their studies on schedule. The increasing incidence of examination misconduct, poor attendance of lectures and massive failures in a number of courses show that some of you have still not got the message. We are not prepared to compromise standards and you should be mindful of the fact that there are no sacred cows in this University. Any student who is unserious about his or her studies will surely be shown the way out.
“I would like to register my most sincere appreciation for the way and manner most staff, both academic and non-academic, have taken their jobs very seriously. This is particularly commendable when viewed against the background of numerous constraints in our work environment. The University Management is committed to continuing to work towards a progressive reduction of these constraints; and prays to God to reward you abundantly for your enormous sacrifice.
“In the past, we have listed an array of problems affecting our work. I should report today that remarkable progress is being made in respect of space constraints. Apart from the completion of additional multi-purpose hall that can accommodate up to 1,500 students, a befitting Library Complex that could accommodate over 2,000 students at any given time had been completed and already put to use. Similarly, various projects are on-going with the view to easing space problem in the University.
“I would like to acknowledge the support and assistance we have been receiving from Governments of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and other catchment area states of the University. Similarly, we want to acknowledge the support of all the security organizations in the state, the general public and our leaders. They have made our task much easier, thereby contributing immensely to the peace we have enjoyed and are proud of.
“Finally, I want to thank, particularly, the members of the Ceremonies Committee who have been able to bring us together and made this ceremony a success.
“I wish you a safe return to your respective destinations.
Thank you.”

52nd Annual Conference of Geographers Held...Click to read more
The 52nd Annual Conference of the Association of Nigerian Geographers with the theme Climate Change and Sustainable Development was held at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
The Confernece which was declared open by the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Alh (DR0 Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Sarkin Yamman Sokoto took place in the Auditorium of the Sokoto Energy Research Centre from Monday 14th to Thursday 17th February, 2011.
A total of one hundred and five (105) papers were presented by some of the over three hundred (300) participants from Nigeria, Nigeria Republic and Burkina Faso.
The following communiqué was presented at the Conference:
. Climate Change is real as several papers revealed steadily rising temperatures, incidence of flooding in several parts of Nigeria like Sokoto, Lagos, Owerri, Benin and others, and at the same time drought is being experienced in some parts of the world. Also there has been disappearance of indigenous flora and fauna
. Human activities such as gas flaring, bush burning, deforestation, uncontrolled development of human settlements, road construction, etc have tremendously contributed to environmental degradation that exacerbated global warming and climate change.
. There is considerable variation about indigenous knowledge of climate change and evidently the most vulnerable group in the society (women and children) was observed to be less informed.
. Climate change constitutes a major threat to agriculture, food security and livelihoods, whether it manifests as flood or drought.
The Conference further made the following recommendations:
- The indigenous knowledge as well as the adaptive response should be harnessed and strengthened through both formal and informal education;
- Remote Sensing, GIS 9Geographical Information system) techniques and more active involvement of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) should be used to monitor indicators of climate change so that early warnings about attendant dangers of climate change can be disseminated so that communities, Governments and other agencies can make adequate preparations;
- In view of the fact that existing equipment for teaching and training of Geography students on weather and climate and thus climate change in our Secondary Schools are grossly inadequate, Ministries of Education all over the country should provide basic weather stations for all schools where Geography is taught;
- Stakeholders meeting on Climate Change appear to be more at the global level to the neglect of the local. In order to be able to capture the socio-cultural dimensions of Climate Change at the local level, there is need for Stakeholders meeting from the local, state to national levels from time to time; and
- Again, more needs to be done about biodiversity conservation in view of the threats to flora and fauna.
